In 1886 Jack Crawford founded the J.W. Crawford Company, with offices located at what is presently home to The Cassius Billiard Room at 318 S. Third Street, across from the U.S. Courthouse in downtown Minneapolis. In addition to remodeling downtown office buildings, restaurants, and warehouses, Crawford's more significant client was the Gamble Skogmo Co. Ray Merz joined the company in the 1930's, purchased the company stock in 1951, changed the name to Crawford Merz Construction and moved the business to the present location at 2316 Fourth Avenue South, on the edge of downtown Minneapolis. Ray left a legacy of hard work, honesty, and dedication to family and continued to "check in at the office" twenty plus years after his retirement in 1976.
